the visit
Why oh Why cant he come on to a National TV Station and do a program like Question Time ,meet the victims in a question and answer situation ,what are they trying to hide ,Should he be allowed to even visit the uk ? A POLL SAYS NO ,should the Government ban his visit ,Your Views
It has been reported that Vatican officials are concerned the Pope's visit to England and Scotland could be overshadowed by demonstrations.
Cardinal Nichols appeared to play down such suggestions, saying he would not put the "real tragedy" of child abuse "in the category of something that will overshadow everything else about this visit".
And responding to a poll that more than three quarters of Britons think the taxpayer should not contribute to the cost of the four-day visit, the cardinal said it would be a "very sad day" when a country said it could not afford it.
He added: "It would be a real gesture of isolationism. We should remember that the Pope comes as the spiritual leader of one in five of all people on this planet so this is not a minor figure as it were."
He also stressed the "important agenda" of the visit in developing relationships between the Government and the worldwide Catholic Church.
Asked on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show if the Pope would meet with abuse victims during his state visit the cardinal said: "The pattern of his last five or six visits has been that he has met victims of abuse.
"But the rules are very clear, that is done without any pre-announcement, it is done in private and it is done confidentially, which is quite right and proper so I think we have to wait and see."

yer no happy about this bazzer, wits the big deal?
personally i think its a great thing - i promote anything that makes people happy, if having the pope over for a visit every 30 years makes the catholic community in the UK happy then surely its all good?
i know that us Ben Afflicks are yer worst nightmare dude but spread the love - Papes need to be happy too.

I only want him to tell the truth for once , meet his victims in puplic ,answer the question in public ,Not pre-scripted question in secret talks ,that tells me he is hideing the truth , as the head of a religion he should speak the truth and tell all his involvment in the scandals that blight his religion untill then how can the catholics be happy knowing the head of there religion was involved and denied it for years ,if the catholics are happy with what has gone on over the decades then they are no better than the abusers and those who hid them ,and its beyond me why they can go and hear him preaching the bible and taking his blessings then walk away happy ,not a christian act in my book

in fairness its Cardinal John "billy the kid" Newman no really sure of his credentials - but he has a school oot in lanarkshire which is legendary for bringing the Ben Afflicks up good and proper - isnae easy task in amongst an area full of the wrong uns like yersel - so fair play to Cardinal John - teaching weans the good way (without any wee free influence) for years now!

The problem with criticising the Roman Catholic church or a Protestant church, if you live in N. Ireland or Scotland, is that it is perceived as a bigoted statement. People always assume that a statement has a connection to Irish Republicanism or Britishness. This shouldn't be the case.
I'm an atheist from a Protestant background and believe that Jesus existed but was not the son of God. He was a thinker who was ahead of his time and challenged established religion. His 'where one or two people are gathered' is an example of this and I believe that he was against an established hierarchal priesthood. Also, remember that the New Testament was compiled between one and two centuries after his death by people playing church politics.
I must admit, I'm pretty ignorant of the tenets/history of the Eastern Orthodox churches (so am not aware if they are guilty too) but feel that the Roman Catholic church, since its inception, has been mainly interested in power and wealth. Like the Irish/British problems of today, the spiritual and temporal have been interwoven into their adherent's thoughts.
To my mind, the Roman Catholic church are the worst of a bad lot. Throughout history, they have consistently decreed that "It's my way or the highway" or thousands of years in purgatory. Before the Reformation, they sold Papal Indulgences to the rich to forgive their sins, filling church coffers and allowing the wealthy to do what they wanted with a clear conscience. This was quietly dropped to protect the church brand.
Once upon a time, when a Pope spoke, he spoke 'infallibly'. This was God's Law, speaking through his representative on earth. As science has disproved many of these 'infallible' pronouncements, the tune has changed. Now a Pope is only speaking 'infallibly' when he announces that he is speaking infallibly. A cunning ploy by the church to square a circle but it doesn't wash.
The Roman Catholic church is a brand name like Coca Cola, Disney and Sky.
