Are you getting the internet speed you think?
Wasn't sure where to put this so thought I'd start it here.
Sorry if anything like this has been posted before.

Are you getting the internet speed you thought you were, I was talking with someone and they so politely told me I wasn't getting anywhere near what I thought I was getting. After checking it out, they were right.
I thought I was on 20MB virgin, but I'm only 20Mb. The big and little 'b' representing 'bit' or 'byte'.
Not to confuse the issue too much, there are 8 bits to 1 byte (a bit is a character or number). When your internet provider says they are giving you 20 meg, they don't tell you, your getting 20 megabits not megabytes.
The difference would be as shown

Download Speed: 19401 kbps (2425.1 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 562 kbps (70.3 KB/sec )

Used this speed test
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Notice that I'm getting 19 megabits, not bytes which actually shows I'm getting 2.4 megabytes. So whereas I'm thinking I'm getting 20 meg, I'm actually getting only 2.4 meg
Apparently, this is the same with BT and many other companies out there.

Your thoughts?

I thought that we were all on Mb/s rather than MB/s. Can you give me an example of an ISP that actually gives 5MB/s? I'll move to them.

Some guy who understands this is winding you up. Bits/bytes is understood by most computer people. 20 Mb/s is probably the best you can get in the UK today. Have a Google.

Thanks for moving Begbie.

As for being aware, guess I wasn't, I agree, I just took Mb as megabyte, wasn't until it was mentioned that I even thought about it.

Now where'd I leave the 'Wacky Bakkie'

aye...that's what i told the bloke on the blower. Told him i'd taken a quantum leap back 10 years to dial up and he said 'well haha - i don't think it's that bad' Then i started sending him speed data and modem stats and he's changed his tune. Not paying $80 per month for that shite
