View Full Version : TCP/IP connections patch (XP SP2)

TCP/IP connections
If you're running Windows XP SP2, there will be a file named tcpip.sys running on your system. What this does is it limits the number of simultaneous TCP/IP connections from your computer to the internet to 10. This is done by Micro$oft in an attempt to slow down the spread of worm.s.
This is all well & good unless you are wanting to use P2P software. In which case it will slow down your file transfers dramatically. In the case of streaming, this will mean the slower download of streams, leading to more buffering.
You can increase your connections limit to a recommended 50, using the following patch. Be aware that Micro$oft keep changing the tcpip.sys file using Windows Update. So if you experience buffer problems after a recent update, run the file again (you don't have to change anything, but it will tell you the current limit).
Instructions:
Simply unzip and run the program. When Windows warns you about changing the system files, deny it or it will try to replace the hacked file with the original one with a limit of 10 from your Windows installation disc.
If your antivirus software flags it as a Hack tool. No need to worry, it is. It hacks the tcpip.sys file! Just delete if you want, but you'll need to download it again if you want to change the limit again.

I've tried this patch previously due to the error message received when playing back TVAnts (which hasn't worked for me since day 2) regarding the open port issue with XPSP2. On installing the patch, a DOS window opens saying there is no limit problem with my XP1 PC. But, as ever, TVAnts comes up with the message (even though it is clear that buffering is occuring as usual) and fails to display the stream (PCast also behaves like this for me tho with no error message). It seems that something is getting in the way !!!
I'd really appreciate if someone could sort this problem out once and for all. TVAnts is the only player with ESPN Asia (broadcast out of Malaysia with virtually non-stop Premier football). I'm getting used to watching the beautiful display from Shanghai Sports when played on PPStream, but Chinese isn't quite as good as Andy Gray.
Cheers anyway for everything you've done. My life in Tokyo has changed for the better !! Good Luck

XP Service pack 1 is OK. It's service pack 2 that adds the tcpip.sys file.
The problem is TvAnts. I get that message sometimes. Other times, not. The TvAnts developers are presuming everyone uses XP service pack 2 & that is the problem.
I'm more inclined to think that TvAnts isn't good with higher bitrate streams. I tend to stick with channels under 280Kb/s on my 512K broadband. Anything above that & it either buffers or I get that TCP/IP message even though I've patched it.

sorry admin for bothering you but when you say deny changing it from 10 does this mean its ok as it is? Im not a computer wizard so please forgive me if i seem thick but dont want to do something that will effect my pc.
its already set on 10,when i deny it then it just remains the sameand clicks off,Ive downloaded the bits you have said, and does not say unzip but extract which ive done ok.

hi Tony
sometimes when installing the patch you can get a windows warning which attempts to re-set your tcpip back to 10 ,if you get this windows warning then decline it ie deny it the chance to change back to 10
you may as said get a windows security warning during instalation ignore that and carry on with the installing of the patch you will find it does make quite a differance

Opening more internet connections has made the sound on your computer go fuzzy?
That's got to be a first.

TVants recommend an oppening of 500 one or two other players say 256.I personnally have mine open at 256,and it still buffers sometimes but overall it is usually trouble free, but it's entirely up to you.......:drink:

i have the program and it works fine, but im just wondering if i should pu the limit up to, i currently have it at 50, but larner says that if i want to watch ppmate with no buffering i should have it at 256, however the program says that this will allow worms to sprea d very fast.
WHat limit should i have for ppmate and what are those worms that are the problem?
Help appreciated.

Tony Larner is just giving you a guide to how he finds it, others find it runs fine at 50. If you have problems, then up it, or vice versa.

I have downloaded the patch and its working really good. The problem is every time i turn my computer on I get this message....RTHDCPL.EXE-ILLEGAL SYSTEM DLL RELOCATION. The system DLL user32.DLL was relocated in memory. The application wiil not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for new a DLL.
The computer seems ok but really want to know if this message is because of the patch download??
Please Help...
Sorry to go on & on!!

It's not from using this patch. The patch changes a system (.sys) file, not a .dll .
Sounds like you've installed an ActiveX plugin (.ocx) that's causing you problems. I'd try to remember the last media program/plugin I installed then run a system restore to before it.
