Rooney's ban reduced to two matches at Euro 2012
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16064924.stm
Personally I feel the ban should have been upheld if UEFA had followed their own rules to the letter of the law.
However, given the fact that it's Wayne Rooney and the English FA's (and indeed the English press') attitude that anytime anything bad happens to an England player it's unfair, I can see UEFA reducing it for the fact that they didnt want a media backlash as seen with FIFA.
Also, I'm sure the sponsors probably had a private word about losing Rooney for the group matches, given there's no certainty that England will get past the group stages.

There is quite a bit of conspiracy theory and accusations of favouritism and hypocrisy surrounding this decision.
Quite a few players have received only a two game ban for violent conduct or dangerous play in international competitions. Rooney was a plum for doing it, but he also made no fuss when being sent off and the player he kicked also didn't make a show.
I would think the ref, the player and the precedent of previous players getting only two games was more likely to have contributed to the reduction as opposed to outside pressures from the media or sponsors.

Totally rate Sturridge, class player. Rooney will only screw up and get sent off again , leave him at home.
Looks to me like trying to keep everyone sweet. Is it that good news for England, only for the fact if they do bad they can then blame Rooney not being eligible in the first games.

I hope the next player sent off in the Premier League for violent conduct appeals it. This just sends a message to the rest of the England squad that they ain't good enough without Rooney.

Harry Redknapp and David Moyes follow Kenny Dalglish in criticizing Rooney's appeal by the FA

It's borked, but it boils down to the fact there are different rules at different levels of the game and that is what managers should be highlighting - not playground swipes at getting their player's bans reduced in the future.
