Back here again. Five months after my opo and I'm still off work. Back's still not right and not getting any better now. At the hospital today for another MRI scan to find out what's going on in there. Should get the results in a couple of weeks. Apparently they'll tell me whether I need physio, a second op or I'm as good as I'm gonna get

.I have been following this thread since it started and feel now is the time to offer my tuppence worth,I suffered a triple slipped disc back in 73 and there was No intention of surgery back then as the option was spinal fusion and Fook that,so I took my chance with Traction and rehab(was still in the army)and after countless osteopaths working on me I discovered a level of comfort that suited me as long as I didn't overdo it I got along,I am aware that medical science as come on in leaps and bounds (Heart bypass 5 years ago)proves that but the point I am trying to make is no matter what they do to you to fix things you have to accept the fact you will always have a problem it's your ability to except what is the norm for you and don't push things further than you think you can because at the time you feel fine, but no two people are the same and I hope they can fix you but as I said you have to accept you may still have a problem.......

Cheers fellas! I take on board and appreciate your advice tjl about accepting that I may always have a problem with my back and I honestly do realise this. The reason I am still trying to get 'even better' is because at the moment I do still have constant pain (although I do admit it's not as bad as it was) and I'm stiff as anything during the night and all morning (not in the good way), sometimes I can't put my socks on til I've been up for a couple of hours and still popping Morphine now and then which, let's just say, doesn't agree with me very much lol!

Also I have a heavy job (truck tyre fitter) so I need the strength to be there in the base of my back and obviously at the moment it's weak as piss. If I don't carry on with medical attention and try to get it as good as I can get then it's a fact that I'll have to give up my current job and try and find something a lot less physical and there's a lot of people out there at the moment who are fitter than me and having difficulty finding a job! Not to mention that I do actually like my job and would be gutted to have to leave it really.

Playing with the kids too is another reason, after 5 mins I'm knackered or my back starts screaming and I have to tell my son once again that Dad has to sit down cos his back's hurting. Even sat on the floor playing board games bloody hurts cos the back stiffens right up and I don't want that at all.

If the hospital do turn around and tell me 'sorry mate, nowt else we can do, it's fucked' then fair enough, at least I tried! I've got to try otherwise I'll never know if there was something else they could have done for me. I just want to try everything to get it as near 100% as I can while I'm in the system as it were.

I'm not having a go or owt here and I haven't spat my dummy out, I just wanted to explain my reasons why I've gone back and sought more medical help. I don't want to come across as a big fanny who couldn't handle having this problem for the rest of my life, I worked with it fitting truck tyres for over 2 years so I know how to handle it. I'd like to see anyone fit 1 truck tyre with a prolapsed disc, not blowing my own trumpet though cos I HAD to do it, kids to feed and a roof to keep over etc.. had to give in and have the op in the end though cos my back just gave out completely and I couldn't walk for a week until they got me in.

There's obvioulsy more reasons than that too but that's some of the main ones why I want to carry on with the medical side of things.

My Dad done his back too in the 70's, he had the operation (1976 I think) and was never the same again. He'd also tried traction and physio and all the other shite they made you do first before the op and none of it worked. He's the same as you now, he's alright as long as he doesn't overdo it. Things have definately moved on since he had it all done though from what he's told me. For example he was in a plaster jacket at one point, and was told to completely rest, they wouldn't even do that now as they want you to move it as much as you can. Totally different approach to how this sort of stuff should be treated.

Like I say though I do appreciate your advice. I just didn't want you thinking I was a big girl's blouse

P.S. spinal fusion is still an option... if it goes that way like. Just wait for the results from todays scan now. Should take a couple of weeks.

Your medical team is worse then Arsenals and that is saying something.

..Please I don't think your spitting out a dummy I truly sympathise with you,if those same options were open to me back then I would have gone with it,and as for maintaining your family I understand what you are going through it is a major worry specially now in this day and age it's just that you will have to accept at some point they will fix you or not that was the biggest thing when I was told nothing else we can do for you sorry,it was hard mentally but you have to try everything offered you.unfortunately you have picked a time when like every bugger else CUT BACKS are becoming the Norm, and the NHS is the first to feel the force of these I regret not joining a private health scheme when it was first offered me as I am a big believer in the NHS,but you cannot undo what's been done sometimes, that is the hardest part acceptance of what is and what is not,Yeah I was encased in plaster and at the time some Nurse told me that if I had Spinal Fusion this is what it would be like for all time,I was also told that it is the muscle criss crossing the back that causes the most problems and it was this that led me to gentle exercise and osteopaths and a degree of movement without to much pain "without sounding like a Rambo type I have a high pain threshold which is a good thing in that respect but once that level is reached out come the pain killers " and doing a job of work that involved doing all the things that were not helping my problem but after 40 years I still am doing that job(Well till January) just as long as I am careful, but I think tyre fitting would not be a good idea if they say Sorry nothing we can do for you,I truly hope they will fix you I really do,only people in the same boat can truly sympathise with you..

Looks like it's back to work Monday! I'm officially at the point now where there's nowt else they can do. Specialist said go back and if you're fine then great, if your back goes again you'll have to look for a new job lol!

Looking forward to going back though, been off far too long, I've started to like Jeremy Kyle and see Homes Under the Hammer as a high point of the day Hope it doesn't go again, it still aches like fook!

My van better not have been raped either while I've been off and my air jack better still be fookin there...

Good luck, man. Look on the bright side. You might have a pain in the back but you won't have any pains in the arse (the kids) for 40 hours a week.

I know it wont help the back but have you thought of a pain management course?
Both my kids have had bad backs...both work in IT! Both resolved them (still have to be careful though) with a special kind of vibrating traction system. Took a long while though. I am told that spinal fusion works for a period but just shifts the problem along further. I think Deadly Will went for that one so he would know more.

Good luck and don't go too mad. It will still be sore for a long time and every twinge will be a worry. Use it as a warning and be careful. Keep up your exercises I still do 2 and half years now I think.

Aye gonna take it easy from now on. If a trailer is going for MOT in half an hour and wants 6 tyres in future then it'll be ready when it's fookin ready. That was the straw that broke this camels back good n proper back in April. Now it'll be... 6 tyres? half an hour? MOT? I'd book another slot mate
