When you're just browsing, it might be dropping to a low speed but you don't notice.
Alternatively, there are a lot of people who blame their ISP for messing up their P2P links.
My usual response is the old 'turn it off and back on again' at half-time, letting the hub and the PC stay off for a couple of minutes.
A couple of months ago, my line speed was terrible. Checks showed that my line had gone from being capable of handling 9 Mbps to 4 Mbps. It took ages via a BT Indian call centre to get it sorted.

You have to use http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ for BT, Tats. They only accept readings from this site. If you are ringing them, take a screen dump of your results and whatever they ask you to do, say that you've already tried it.

Is this the 3rd world internet speed thread ?
OP, check what background tasks/cpu you have running while watching streams.

What really annoys me is that they consider 600 Kbps as an 'acceptable speed' on an 8000 Kbps line. (OK. I got my Kilos and Megas confused earlier ).
