Players who never received an international cap but should have
I know everybody always says Steve Bruce but here's my own personal nomination for a great player never to win that cap...

John Hendrie - Scotland definately missed a trick there.

There's not too many GREAT players who were never capped. Probably lots of good players. Steve Bruce played a solitary B international, but never lined up for England in a senior game which surprises some fans who didn't know that.

I guess it's how you interpret my title to the thread. In my opinion John Hendrie was GREAT. Started out on the wing for Boro and was moved up front to partner Paul Wilkinson and became a formidable partnership. In one season we stormed the then 2nd division and were only very narrowly beaten in the semi-finals of the league cup by Man Utd who were at the top of Division One. I think we also went to Round 5 in the FA Cup too. All in all a great servant to the club.

I'd call John Hendrie a 'good' player who deserved a cap. With international recognition, who knows if he would have got even better? He was probably as good as others who received caps at the time.
Edit: eg. Who remembers David Bowman who was in the squad at the time?

I would suggest Billy Bonds and Howard Kendall.....and from the dim and distant past Sam Bartram and Joe Shaw

West Ham had a few who never got capped. I'm not having that John Hendrie was a great player though! An effective operator no doubt but great? One mans meat is another mans poison I suppose. I like Pele's definition of a great player. I'm paraphrasing him now, don't get knickers in a twist, he said a great player is one who would walk into any other team, such is is ability. I like that.

Done. TBH, it leaves the field more open.

Howard Kendall, Andy King and Steve Bruce spring to mind certainly.
