She still turns the air blue in certain quarters in the Old Mother Country...

Having watched question time again there is no doubt he has caused more harm to the BNP than good. However, as much as I despise the man they never did respond to his points about muslim women who have been raped, basically their treatmment of women generally. One muslim in the audience asked him why he just picked on islam when there was just as something disgusting in the bible, not exactly a denial of what he was saying was correct. I notice the mulim wone on the panel also side-stepped that issue too.
I have no place for any religion in my life but it's about time a proper debate on religion was had because quite frankly anyone with half a brain knows the stuff in the bible/koran etc is complete hogwash. In fact i've said for years anyone who believes this crap suffers from a mental illness. Imagine if there was no such thing as religion today and suddenly you came along saying all the stuff that's in these books, you would be senctioned under the mental health act yet this is what millions of people believe, it's staggering when you think about it.

Religion brings a lot of good to society. Probably more good than bad. It just doesn't make the news. Whether you dismiss it or not to suggest that a large majority of the human race only have half a brain is...well brainless.
I do not follow a religion, probably never will. I do see it's place on society though. If and when I have a sprog I'd consider sending him/her to Sunday School. There are some good lessons to be learnt from the bible (I've not read the koran) if only from a "mythical" point of view. Is it going to be Dr Zeuss for the Toffeepop's young uns???
I know quite a few people who attend church and/or mosques who are better members of society than most. Religion, in my view, is a good way to bring societies together and although I do not believe in any of it in particular I think it has an important part to play and shouldn't be so easily dismissed. It also brings families and local communites together (round here anyway).
There is a church across the road from my house and you often see a mix of christians, muslims, jews and hindus mixing on a Sunday morning if there is a coffee morning or flower sale. Likewise the same happens at the local mosque.
Do I live in a different world than everyone else?

I think religion has a place, and a debate on religion is fruitless - questioning peoples faith is, in my eyes, inhumane. People find comfort and meaning from religion - its one of the staple parts of human existence. we have tried since the dawn of humans to understand why we're here and some people don't want to believe its a fluke of science. Personally, im more than happy with that view because it opens so many more doors to the probability of alternative life forms.
As to what apparently happens in Islamic cultures is up for debate - and, i suspect, a very singled out and uncommon way of practicing the belief. Much the same as Christianity is split into different demoninations im sure other regions suffer the same due to "modernising" (which i also think is fucking ridiculous). This also explains the extremist islamics who believe the world should be islamic. This only goes as far as any religion has in the past. Christianity, historically, is a truely violent and horrific religion.
I think Griffin chose to single out one small aspect in order to make his point seem valid. Some elitist Christian movements still believe that same sex couples should be stoned to death - yet no one would spread that notion to cover all Christian beliefs.
Griffin was very clever in that he knew his point was just, noone here would condone raping of a wife, but in the same vein, no one on the show would be so brash as the point out its a very small minority as that doesn't justify the actions. However, wiping Islam from the face of the UK isn't a justified solution. Its merely closing the curtains on the issue and has absolutely nothing to do with Britain, or being British. Its a problem in Iraq and Afghanistan to which Griffin has said he wants nothing more to do with.

God so great - heavens the best blah blah. The only people that know what happens when you die are dead people and dead people don't speak. Never have. Might be great, might be nothing, but we'll never know. Therefore every religion is based on a man made idea and spread around over time, taken up by gullible or interested people, many of whom teach it to their young children that dont know any different as a thruth. A good example of how easy a religion can be started can be seen today with the relatively new religion of scientology, which is based on the writings of a popular science fiction writer. Many believe his words are now fact and hand over their money in the millions shock horror. It starts out being labelled a 'cult' by established religions until numbers swell, then it is labelled a 'movement' then with increasing numbers becomes a 'religion' and your off.

Skip, the people I know who regulary attend church or the mosque do not do it for the reason that they will go to heaven or get forgiven by god or whatever. They go to socialise, raise money for charity (mate-you won't get that), teach their kids decent values and shit like that.
I think the problem is with extremist. These are in a minority and in my opinion these idiots would find a different thing to be fanatical about if religion didn't exist.

..why don't they go to the coffee shop or the park then if they don't believe. What - do they sit in church during the sermon listening to music on their headphones or talking maybe? If you don't believe it why would you go there and listen to it, and sing songs praising god or whoever in the first place. Sounds to me like your town needs a big meeting shed...now who do we know that can help us out with that?

Sheds are soooo last year.
Kylie, just because we don't do something doesn't mean it's wrong. Live and let live. These people are harmless. It's the nutters who are the problem....they'd find any old excuse to resort to violence if religion didn't exist.
Bible bashers who are spending Sunday afternoon in church sipping tea chomping on Mrs Miggin's home baked muffins are harmless. Would you rather they are roaming the streets looking for Smack? Well, I would to but that's beside the point.
