I was under the impression that it was being changed to 'Sports Direct' as a showcase to bring in another sponsor for the ground and wasn't permanent.
Well it is, sort of. At the moment it's Sports Direct to 'showcase' that the ground is available for sponsorship. I bet that when someone comes in to sponsor, say Nike for example and it's then called the Nike Stadium there will be less fuss and less Sky News 'breaking news' It's only because it's Ashley's business which is currently up there that fans are being the way they are, because he's disliked. Not many people were moaning about him when we jumped up to 2nd in the league and applauding his business sense for getting £35 million for Andy Carroll (i still can't believe we got that much, for Carroll?) But no, whatever he does he can't win. The books are almost balanced now and he's doing what he thinks is best for the club by offering to stadium for sponsorship. If no one comes in he will either sponsor it himself (take note how much this man has already put into our club, paid off debts etc) or take it back to St James Park. If every club was run in the way the fans think it should they'd be in very big trouble. Most fans to be honest have no idea how big businesses like these run, none at all. They see it as so black n white (no pun intended) they just think, where did that money from Carroll go? well, there's wages, bills to pay etc, running a club is not just about what we see on the pitch. When Ashley say's the money will be reinvested in the club that doesn't particularly mean on players, means in all aspects of the club. But we get all these so called NUFC fan club 'leaders' trying to dictate what everyone else should think. Take the NUFC supporters trust. They tried to get this campaign going for a fan take over an just over 20,000 signed up. Not even half of our average gate! Most democracies work when there is a majority but for some reason they keep saying '20,000 fans say yes' as if that's a good thing, my counter argument is '32,000 fans say no'. I trust Ashley to get the club stable and he's done pretty well to do that since he's been there. He said within five years when he first came and we should give him that. there are many clubs who would like Ashley as chairman, trust me.
I think you make some good points there toffee, but one I must pick up on is when you say 'that's just the way it is and we just have to accept it', bollocks to that, I hate the way football is with so much money in the game and that's exactly why I choose not to go to the games any more. I'm not prepared to get ripped off every week to watch a game of footy and I wish more people would choose not to go for that reason. That's why this site is here and is so popular. I think most people on here think along those lines.
Can't argue with your comments about Ashley though, when you put it like that he has done a pretty good job.

I agree (see my previous post to the one above) What i should have added is we accept it or we don't. I hate the modern game, or at least the money side of things and the fans getting ripped off. I still love seeing someone run past 5 players and whack it in the top corner though, the game itself i still love, the rich fuckers running the clubs, i don't. The only way it's going to change was if there was a collective among fans from every club getting together and saying they have had enough because then it will make all clubs listen, until then, it's not going to change.
Well chaps I'm sill alive and kicking, been reading through some of the postings, still had a go at me not as a fan but me personally
Begbie, wrong mate, I didn't mind the slagging offs or the bantering it was all fun, after all thats what its all about isn't it, trying to make it a bit like on the terraces, supporters having a go at each others clubs & managers etc, but this became a personal attack on me which I admit I reacted to, no I didn't spit the dummy out, I was basically informed I wasn't welcome hear so stopped calling in as simple as that.
Tell you what i'm sick of, the press, be it MOTD, Radio 5, the newspapers, whoever, is the lack of praise for Newcastle this season. Earlier in the season they were just waiting for them to crumble, then it got to halfway and they were saying things like 'they won't keep this up etc' 'they'l do a Blackpool' etc. Now here they are with just a few games to go and you have to say, fighting for 4th spot (considering the games those above us have as well). if Chelsea are fighting for CL then so are they given they are on the same points as them AND have to play them. Ok, they may not get 4th spot but really my main point is, given they've beaten and drawn with Man utd, got a few draws with all the top teams, played at times so amazing football, Ba, Cisse, Cabaye, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Collocini, all players who could get into any of the top sides, they should be getting a lot more praise then they are Given the turmoil Newcastle were in, the shit with the board, the sackings, the renaming of the ground, lots going on and for them to turn it around like they have i think deserves credit. Also, Pardew has shown what a good manager he is when he's got the players he has. Also, Taylor has been out for a while, Ba, Tiote were missing for the African nations and for them to be in 6th spot and not frightened of anyone i think makes them contender for team of the season.
Mind you, knowing Newcastle, this could all come crashing down at any moment but whereas before when they were doing well there was some unrealistic dreams, now there seems to be more of a 'let's keep going and see where we end up' attitude and i think that's helped take the pressure off the players, the manager and credit where credits due, Mike Ashley has got the club stabalised, his business sense has been pretty shrewd and next season is looking like they'll be in the black rather than in the red which all bodes well for an exciting future.
I think Newcastle have been great this year. Some great buys up front with Ba and Cisse.. and I like both Cabaye and Tiote in the middle. The problem will be hanging onto them, as ever.
Its strange how some teams just click all of a sudden. Pardew has done really well.

ive said for a few seasons Newcastle will suprise everyone and get a top 3 finish
i still think they will within a few seasons
they are a real not sleeping more napping giant , the performance from them this season given all the points mentioned above is not only a tribute to all at the club but a clear indication of what may be ahead when other issues not in play
could be right MadC
depends if Arsenal and spurs take their eye off the ball and allow their local rivalry to blinker them
either way a great season for the toon
Very much so Accie. If you said to them at the start of the season "You will be challenging for EUROPA" they would have been over the moon. Some of the buys Pardew has made have been quality, he's a better manager than I thought
Yeah Pardew surprised me a little but you know when you look at his record, it's not too bad. ok, West Ham he had problems but had it not been for a screamer in the last minute from gerrard, the hammers would have won the cup. He was flying with Southampton when they sacked him (unofficial rumours are that he was shagging the chairmans Mrs and then was copping off with some young lass) but nevertheless, he's older and wiser now, seems to have the players really playing for one another and just as importantly, the fans on his side. The fans weren't really against him anyway, he just had to prove himself after the way the club let Hughton go (I didn't like the way it was done but i always said i didn't think Chris was the man to take us up to top 6/4. The club have a great wage policy in place and with the new rules coming i next year where clubs have to show they're books are balanced otherwise you can't play in Europe, Newcastle are looking like one of the healthiest clubs in the country. got to give them credit for that. If they can have another good season next year (Europa cups takes a lot out of teams so need 3 or 4 more quality squad players) then they can go on to be a regular top 6 side i think.
I think i'm the only one who likes the orange away strip as well
