Man City rename stadium: Etihad Stadium
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/14080388.stm

The money in the game really is sickening .. how long will it be before traditional stadiums likes Old Trafford, Anfield, Goodison Park be changing their names for the sake of the all-mighty dollar (or pound)?

Admittedly, City's council house can't really be described as a traditional stadium.

Hehe very true but at least City of Manchester Stadium, or Eastlands, had more identity than the new Ali Baba Stadium name

Can't see why they would be needing the money.

Just hoping that when the sponsorship deal runs out at the Grove that we will go to a traditional name rather than having it sponsored.

Etihad isnt it owned by the same arabs who own city. Is this not away of building up the revenue of the club to get around UEAFs new rules on club revenue

Sorry to spoil your fun, Tats. 'Etihad' means 'union' or 'unity'. We call the country the 'United Arab Emirates' but strictly speaking, it is a union of separate, distinct emirates. Each emirate has different laws and a different ruler so they can't be described as 'united' as we understand the word.

We went through this when Etihad started sponsoring them. It's an old debate. Things must be quiet in Manchester for the MEN to resurrect the discussion (or maybe just typical lazy journalism and twitterers).

The reason is that they need to get more money in the balance the books when this fair play rule comes in from UEFA. If they carried on as they have done they'd be fooked and would have to sell shit loads of players.

No coincidence that the state owned airline is the airline for the country they are one of the richest in the country?

So does this mean that if a club can cook the books to show a massive sponsorship deal then this new fair play law doesn't mean shit then?

Yes. Apparently Abramovich has bought a car and is calling it Abs Cabs and is going to change the name of Stamford Bridge to the same and pay Chelsea (himself) 200 million a year to do so.

They'll get away with it I think.

Man Utd got a £300m+ shirt deal with Nike.... so it's hard to argue against them, even if it is so they can work around the new regs.

Hope they don't mind... it would amuse me no end...

The new regs mean nothing - much like home grown players.

Its all a smoke screen for doing nothing; otherwise teams/chairman/managers/players from all over Europe would have been up in arms. The loop holes are clear and easily exploited (as is being done with City).
