Mac or pc
My son wants a macbook (buying it himself), he has a Sony Vaio laptop currently and I don't see the point. However, what do the more technically minded mong us think, is a mac worth the extra money?

Depends what he will use it for really?
Personally i'd always say no. A pc is more versatile and hardware upgrades/replacements don't come at a premium and you have a much wider choice.
However if he is a video editor, or 3d animator then maybe a mac is better.

That'll be 25k please.
If you go for a mac ask the IT dept at Uni. Ours (and most) have a deal set up with Apple where you can get 15% off.
Much love, cheers.

Logic makes no sense.

If it's for studying and doing geeky stuff which it sounds like it is, then definitely a mac. They are so much better at that sort of thing but the main thing, especially if it's important work, is that they never ever ever get viruses, windows do and you can lose all your stuff.

Seeing as the guy in question has an equivalent high priced lappy the only choice to go for is a macbook/pro. Just imo the entry level macbook is a steal for the price over the hike to macbook pro. Get the macbook but bump the ram to 4gb.
He can run basically any OS he wants through bootcamp or a VM if osx is not to his liking.

I think that Glenman means, "He's got a good lappy. Is there any point in getting a Macbook as well?'

Well he's obviously not happy with what he has if he is contemplating changing OS. To do a comparison..it's like running firefox/chrome/safari with adblock installed when browsing, the same approach takes hold when running osx.

Aye. But are the advantages of buying a new Macbook worth the price if you already have a Vaio? Remember. Teenagers spend £100 on a pair of jeans just because they're trendy and have a wee secret label.
If he's only using it for word processing, browsing the internet and watching porn, where's the value?

I had my own account on the Uni server. That might have been because I was doing computing. Never thought about it before.

Had a whirl on a mac book pro yesterday. Quite impressive for speed and case finish but for me with PC's so cheap it's hard to justify the high price...Left side heat problems - they say it gets hot enough to fry an egg on after 45 mins or so. Only two USB ports also - pretty lame. No HDMI output - need to but a dongle and cable etc... can buy a very capable PC laptop for $700 bux which is more than capable for students needs, and save yourself 2 grand...
