Laptop freezing
My sons laptop is freezing once or more times a day-the regularity is increasing and this has been happening for months. He has just told me about it and he can't remamber how long it has been going on. When you start up in safe mode it doesn't happen and I believe this means it is not a driver problem? I have done a disk defrag and run ccleaner, it didn't freeze for a couple of days after that then wouldn't start at all without the recovery disk inserted-didn't have to go through the whole disk-might have been a coincidence? Any ideas-its not an old computer but out of warranty!

Which operating system are you using? When mine starts to play up I back everything up and re-install the OS. On Windas 7 now, a lot better than vista.

Sounds like it may be the ram on the way out. Do you know if it has 1 or 2 sticks in it. You can do a test on it it's called mem test.

There are two sticks, I googled memtest and there were lots of things there but they ranged in time from 2005-2009, nothing up to date or win7 related-will the old stuff be relevant?

It just won't run if it's not compatiable.
I think that your laptop will run on one stick, I imagine it's at least 2 gig so 1 gig stick should run it ok. If it's only 2 x 512mb then that may be your problem, not enough ram. If it is 2 x 512mb I wouldn't try removing 1 and running it, no chance.
That would definitely be my first option remove 1 Stick at a time and try it. Obviously make sure turn off, touch bare metal before touching the sticks, remove 1 and reboot. If it doesn't reboot just try the other stick. It's quicker than doing the memtest.
Another option maybe the ram has become loose and may just need reseating, make sure it's pushed all the way in so the gold pins don't show.
There are some forums around for w7 mem test, will have a look.

Could be overheating, is the base hot when it freezes? (awesome contradiction there!)

Ok, resurrected my sons laptop and it still freezes but doesn't in safe mode-does this mean it is a driver problem? If so how do you fix that.

My first thing would be to run msconfig and see which startup programs are running. Disable them one by one, re-start after each disable. See what kills it.

Cheers Begbie, I sort of remember (but can't find) info on here about a program or something where you can test all your drivers-any idea where or what that was?
