Ice Cream Van
I thought that this was very funny. I meant to post it a few days ago but forgot.

Quote:
Police in NI have said it was "inappropriate" for an officer to play "ice-cream van" music in an attempt to calm youths attacking a vehicle.

Young people were throwing bottles at a Land Rover vehicle in Lisburn last Saturday when the officer used the tannoy to play the tunes.

A police spokesperson said an officer had used humour to defuse the situation and the trouble had stopped.

However, senior officers are believed to have spoken to the officer involved.

Can any one explain what the Sinn Fein councilor meant as she sounded as they where shooting the youths instead of injecting a little humour

my reading of the quote from the councilor is that she thinks the PSNI should be taking more traditional police action in dealing with social disorder as opposed to using an ice cream van horn in order to try and defuse a bottle throwing incident with humour

i can see the point if i had a group of rioting youths at end of the street i would be looking for something more than the police impersonating mr wippy

on a lighter note does that particular police van only come out if instead of dialing 999 you dial 1(a)99

They should get a recording of Maxs' car alarm from Phoenix Nights-"get back you bastards or I'll break your legs".

Accie. In that part of Belfast/Lisburn, if one of the hoods is from a prominent hard-line Republican family, there's a good chance that a full-blown 'spontaneous' riot would ensue. The crates of 'ready prepared' petrol bombs would appear out of somebody's shed as if by magic.

yes i know the normal routine in "republican" areas and "loyalist" areas at times as well
sadly all too often a small incident leads to petrol bombs and fires and worse, the PSNI have a bloody hard job i dont envy them ,they cant win because unlike in other parts any action they take will be criticised by members /representatives of both communities not because of the actions but because it was against one half or other
sadly those who would rather see a return to times best left in the past still utilize the disillusioned youths of both communities to spark off events
although a lot of the kids dont need much of a push

the police invollved in the incident obviously felt a new appraoch was needed
does anyone actually know how effective the action taken (playing of the tune) was in defusing the situation

sorry i only have the details posted in the above link to go on

I think the youths just laughed, said 'Fair play' and stopped throwing the bottles. Don't think it would work again though.

better that outcome than the others that were/are all too familiar

I also found this quite funny in a dark way. Who the hell would build a gallows to hang themselves?

Quote:
A man who tried to murder his estranged wife with a crowbar has been jailed for ten years.

A judge told Roy Thompson, 49, from Kempton Drive in Coleraine that he had been guilty of a "planned, murderous" attack on his wife Carol last year.

The court heard how Thompson admitted to planning to kill his wife before taking his own life.

When purchasing the crowbar at a local DIY store, he had also bought wood to build a gallows.
