It's not as black and white as that though. Gary Speed wasn't someone who went round looking to get in the newspapers. He was a footballer and a manager and so part of that is you are going to get written about in the newspapers about how well you played etc but that doesn't give them the right to expose his life outside of football across their headlines. What's that go to do with you, me or anyone else apart from his wife?

Fair point. He never tried to benefit from his image, as far as I know.
As we all know, the press aren't social workers. The last time that I read a newspaper was on the trip to Staffs whilst I was on the plane.

Tis a fact tho that if your in the pubic eye and something bad happens the media will dig dig and dig a bit more to find as much dirt as they can . Sadly the more they find the more money they make because people will pay to read it .

Doesn't make it right though. Anyway, we don't know that this is the reason for his death.

I only buy the paper to do the crossword at lunch time, 99% of it is shite that effects no part of my life. If I want a quick glance of the news I'll go on the BBC site in the morning and evening to see whats happening, thats it. The papers survive on bad news and journalists have very little in the way of conscience. Like Tats mentioned, if ply your trade in such a public light, you then tend to find yourself an easy target for the press.

With the Leveson Inquiry ongoing, I think there will be big repercussions if it turns out that a tabloids threats to publish a story pushed the guy over the edge.

With or without his death I would have bought the Star on Tuesday. I'd have used it to wipe my arse straight after. Not to sure my newsagent would like to see that like.

To be honest, if it's true, I hope we never find out OR if it does come out it's used as a story to remove the stigmata from footballers being gay. I know as a fact of one high profile player who bats for the other side (as do the players at his current and former clubs club) but there's an unwritten agreement that it's not coming out (for want of a better phrase) because he'll get so much stick.

It took me a while to get over that initial schock, I remember him as a go getter, what he did for Wales was beyond my hopes....
RIP lad.
