Free Antivirus Softwares 2012
For those FSi members that don't know - you can use multiple spyware programs but you should only use one antivirus product at a time as they can clash with each other and cause your system major problems. If you want to try a new antivirus software from below, you must first uninstall your current one by going to control panel>uninstall programs>right click on your current antivirus and choose uninstall.
MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS
Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.
Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.
Moderators comment - Quite a few FSi members are using this now with great results. Very low on resources - you will notice the speed difference on your system - doing a fine job of catching the nasties! Used in conjunction with Windows firewall, at this point in time it's one of the best of the bunch!
AVAST ANTIVIRUS
Since its introduction in 2004, avast! Free Antivirus has become one of the world’s most popular applications. Its growing pool of over 100 million users consistently give the software high approval ratings.
Moderators comment - A long time favourite of FSi members, the new look 2012 version 6.0 is out now.
Moderators comment - After some complaints about scan speeds, AVG upped there game and now have an excellent free security suite for 2012
These free versions are the same antivirus engines as used in their paid products so rest assured you are not getting an inferior product because it's free!

..had a nasty little thing called ad.serv that attached itself to my browser. Never seen one before. A box pops up and says download blahblah.exe? About 3 seconds later security essentials popped up and nailed it. Good to know it's working...

I'd recommend Dr web for anything malwarebytes can't get rid of. Sorted me out after the spvod fiasco.

Did a scan with Dr Web - seems OK but didn't find anything on my system which suggests that security essentials is doing the job -

Because most of the big box stores send their systems out with the 30 day trials of whoever is giving them the most commission. ****O'S!

Recommend security essentails been using it for a while now and its been really good, very fast scan. Had avg for a long time but then that has gone down hill, it took forever to scan, hours, not good.
Only thing i will say about security essentials is that it runs different on different computers. I have an older computer upstairs and had essentails on that and it made the computer run at 90% all the time. Looked it up on google and some people have had the same. Got rid of that and put avast on and now running normal.

lots of software will struggle on older computers Jake - it's pretty common. I'm about to upgrade myself - a nice new Toshiba laptop as this one is 4 and a half years old and is a bit behind in specs but is still going strong. Never had a blip with it in all it's time - i'm glad i chose it over the others..

The wife got a virus/malware on her netbook yesterday, she has microsoft essentials running and it didn't intercept it which surprised me but it did get rid of it. It was called XP internet security 2011.

I had a real nasty one the other day wouldn't let me run anything to get rid of it, couldn't open task manager to disable it running. All my programs went, well hidden anyway, it looked so authentic. Booted in safe mode and ran rkill and then malwarebytes from a usb stick, had to rename the files on it as it wouldn't recognise them. Even after getting rid of the registry values it still hid all my programs from me , had to run another program to unhide them. Worse 1 I have ever had cant remember the name of it but similar to that one I am sure. If ever anyone is unfortunate to get it give me a shout and i will point you in right direction.
