and to think there was once talk of him playing for England

It is a confidence thing though. he is a very talented keeper, otherwise he wouldn´t be there. Gomez at Spurs is a great example. He´s a terrific goalie, yet there was a time when the spurs faithful would have gladly seen him leave. Things change in football. All the time. He might be better off in his own country, fresh start and all that.

Gomes is still prone to giving away the odd 'Brucie bonus', à la Grobbelaar.

yeah,

he lost it for a bit last Sunday, but overall he´s top drawer. Seems very likeable too. Like a good guy to have in the dressing room. He´s another rarity, plays with a smile on his face.

I loved Barthez for us. It never bothered me that he dropped the odd clanger. He was pure box office. While Schmikes was our best ever keeper (some might argue Edwins as good) Barthez was pure box ofice and an amazing shot stopper.

My grandad says Pat Jennings was the greatest though.

Loved big Pat. None of this punching nonsense. Pat just plucked the ball out of the air with one hand.

Stop pretending you are a wee lad Ruud, even I know Big Pat was best.

My earliest memory of Jennings was him making all those saves at wembley to get the 0-0 draw. That had to around 85. I was just turning 11 then.
Both teams in Ireland had inspirational keepers. Bonner wasn't as good as Jennings, but he was a rock for the republic. What the christ were spurs thinking selling the best goalie in the world to their neighbours?!?

You are younger than I thought Ruud! Big Pat was sold for $40,000 when Spurs thought he was done, Arsenal got many more good years out of him. I was lucky enough to see him play live on numerous occasions both for the Gunners and the mighty Northern Ireland where he single handedly saved us from a few cricket scores. He used to kick the ball so high and long at Windsor they used to say it came down with snow on it and as Begbie said the one handed catches were a thing of beauty.
