You wonder what some chairman expect. Grant has done well with the squad he's got and if the board are unwilling for him to spend money on transfers then what can he do, his hands are tied. As for Martin O'Neill, if I was a West Ham fan I would be looking at the squad that he left at Aston Villa, a lot of those players are not good enough for this level and those were players he brought in.

The way things are going with managers in the league this year and after Blackpool defeat to WBA, Ian Holloway will need to watch his back.

If I were Grant I would want to leave. The owners are only letting him stay because they've come out of it looking bad, and they probably couldn't get anyone else after the debacle.

Yes Snaps,

agree with that. Money talks now, if Grant walks, he would be playing into their hands. Best way to embarrass them is to go on a good run and finish the season strongly. It would be an even bigger embarrassment to the owners if he managed to win the carling cup. I know Arsenal are still in it and I'm not stirring it, but because of what has happened, I'd love to see the hammers win it, see what they say then.

Of course, I want Arsenal to win now, but if we weren't in it, for Grant, I would want WHU to win. Trouble is, if they did, the owners would benefit too.

Yes, but they would be embarrassed as the man they had tried to usurp, then delivers a trophy,

but Birmingham have a big say in it. They are only a goal behind and are home in the second leg, so they have a way to go yet to even get to Wembley.

What a thoroughly mad season this is eh?

Now Bent wants to leave a club, for a club in a worse postion. Why?? Is it money, a fall out...

Itīs got money written all over it that.

Sunderland are upwardly mobile, have a likeable and capable manager and great supporters.

Itīs the dosh, but I canīt blame him for it really. I said in another post, we would all be the same. If you hear that other strikers eleswhere are getting paid better, you want some of it. Sunderland will manage without him, although he is a proven premier league goalscorer.

Got to ask if it is about the money where is the money coming from? Martin O'Neill left/sacked because he wanted to keep milner, if the club can afford to spend 18 - 24 million on Bent seems a bit strange.

As for Grant winning the league cup, dont think it will matter to board much about his future, Capello was sacked after winning la liga, proves if a board want someone gone, he is on borrowed time. When megson was in charge of bolton, a lot of fans wanted rid of him, and a lot said that even if they won the rest of the games of the season and they won the league they'd still want rid of him, fans can be just as fickle.

Money in terms of Bents wages.

Iīm sure Bent would want to stay put if Sunderland paid him what Villa are prepared to.

When you say fans can be as fickle wakka, you should qualify that. I know a lot of Bolton fans personally from my time living in Manchester. They werenīt among the minority who were saying those things. Yes, they were concerned about Megsons ability to steady the ship, but none of them would agree with calling for his head if he was consistently winning games.

And no matter what you or I think, it will be a massive embarrassment to West Hams owners if Grant delivers the carling cup. Correct me if Iīm wrong but the club hasnīt seen a trophy since 1980? So a bit difficult to explain why they were looking to rid themselves of a manager just as he was beginning to turn the league form around, and win a trophy!(if they go on and win it)

The west ham fans reaction, so far, to the news he will be staying has been positive, with the vitriol aimed in the direction of the board

Yea, i'm as fickle as the next fan, but it is fans' opinions fickle and otherwise that always causes a good debate. As for Grant, i hope he does well, and the board are well out of line. Like i said though, if he does win the carling cup, (full credit to him if he does) but has a bad start to next season, i think he will be gone. Not that i'd like to see it, but those are the times of the football manager, unfortunately.

As for Bent, I'd assume that Villa and sunderland would have been about equal on terms of money available, for transfers and wages, if Bent is getting more money at Villa i cant see it being that much more. All in all a good deal for sunderland.

yes wakka,

it's more a move across rather than up!

you made some good points. As I have said wait until we see what Man Utd fans behave like if fergies replacement has a bad start!!

Keeping the thread going...
I would hope that all MAN UTD fans would give a new manager more time as they almost got rid of Fergie after a dodgy start...

But management have to be given the ability to pull the plug when it's not working, it was obvious that Tony Mowbry was out of his depth at the hoops and action earlier in the last season may have seen a different result in May.
Call me old fashioned but when a manager wears a suit and sits throughout the game passionless then its time for a change.

Hope it all works out for Avram though as he appears an honourable man.
