Everton boss David Moyes reckons he has now his strongest-ever squad at Goodison Park - but he will not make any bold pre-season predictions.
The 47-year-old, who joined from Preston in March 2002, guided Everton to eighth place last season and has taken them to as high as fourth during his spell in charge.
But speaking after Everton beat A-League newcomers Melbourne Heart 2-0 yesterday in a pre-season friendly at Etihad Stadium, Moyes expressed elight with the squad that will launch its season against Blackburn at Ewood Park on August 14.
"I think in my time at Everton we've now got as strong a squad as we've ever had so I'm looking forward to it (the coming season)," Moyes said after seeing goals from Jack Rodwell and Louis Saha.
"I'm looking forward to having a season with them and seeing how it goes."
But Moyes will not go public with any firm ambitions for the upcoming season.
"No, I'm not a great goal-setter," he added.
"I think you take the next game and you get on with it and you see where you end up.
"But we're ambitious and we want to do well and we've got a great desire to do better than what we've done in the past so we'll just try to keep it going and hopefully see where we end up."
Former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford nearly scored with his first touch after coming on in the second half against Melbourne, and Moyes believes the new recruit could do well with Everton.
"I think that we needed a little bit more firepower up front and we've brought Jermaine in," Moyes said.
"Jermaine's just struggling a bit with his groin just now, he's not quite comfortable yet at training so we weren't going to use him but I felt we could get 20 minutes so I think he felt fine.
"And his first touch and his first movement nearly showed you why he's scored so many goals through the lower leagues.
"We're giving him a great opportunity to see if he can do it at the highest level."
Nice one fishy some great pictures and stuff from down under on a successful tour pre season has gone well so far looking forward to the new season soon.
Come on premier league hurry up,have to say Everton were very very impressive from start to finish v preston today in a 3-0 win and should have won about 10-0,Gueye again looked very good and going by pre season i would start him in league opener myself, saha and beckford with 2 excellent goals were scorers,
beckford came on at start off 2nd half but went off injured with 5 to go after catching his foot with a preston player when he was about to shoot but moyes says hes back in training monday or tuesday as he says hes alright, saha was deserving of his goal considering he had at least 5 good chances in 1st half
I wouldnt worry one bit either, arteta has 2 years left-think he will stay, dont know about pienaar tho as thats gone pretty quiet-i would say we have one of the best under rated squads in the league,we dont seem to have what you could call a starting 11 [if you get what i mean] as anyone can come in to our team at any time replacing someone else and you hardly notice the difference

In an entertaining game everton won 4-2 after been 2-0 up only for norwich to get 2 goals in 5 mins, then everton retook lead 1 minute later with a beauty from billyaletadinov-everton defending was all over the place at times today-the 1st everton goal was a mistake from ruddy-a shot from cahill that went underneath ruddys arms
cahill scored a hattrick with billy scoring the other,
Billy's got one hell of a left foot .. his goal against Man Utd last season was my favourite, but he really needs to work on other aspects of his game or I can see Moysey selling him
I'm hoping he improves .. best left foot since Sheedy
on another note in one sunday paper
David Moyes last night ruled out a bid for Landon Donovan, despite the United States skipper declaring his desire to rejoin Everton.
The £10 million-rated star is desperate to return to Goodison Park. In a three-month loan spell from LA Galaxy earlier this year he scored twice in 13 games and was a big hit.
But Moyes closed the door on a return after watching the Toffees beat Norwich 4-2 at Carrow Road.
The Everton boss said: “We would love to sign him but we don’t have the finances to do that. The price he would go for would be very big. That would be a problem given his age [28] and what we might pay for him.
It looks as if he will be too expensive for us. We don’t have the money.”
Lets see what happens in the next month,

Moysey's always been shrewd with his signings and maybe 10 million for a 28/29 year old is a bit much ... one thing I noticed towards the end of his loan, the last 2-3 games weren't that impressive and he was even dropped ... and mind you, unlike last season, we haven't got an injury list straight out of Holby City!
Having said that, I wouldn't say no if we somehow got him on loan.
I think he might have been droped/rested as moyes wanted to work out a team for when he left, think he will come back to us on loan at x-mas unless he is sold for millions to say man city-be alright if we got him on a season long loan with a view to full transfer
wouldnt hold your breath on the injury thing as if some internet reports are true, some say say Phil Jagielka is out for 6-8 after an op with some other reports saying hes back in training this week after a knock he took to his knee in training during week - its who you believe-things are looking good if we somehow stay injury free, and the everton v everton game wednesday will be live on the internet for those without everton tv

Did anyone else catch the Eng U-21 match vs Uzbekistan? Ok, so the Uzbek's aren't a great footballing power, but then neither are we ... but Jack Rodwell's performance was superb. Fabio watched it all and I won't be surprised if he selects Rodders for the qualifiers in September.
I just hope no one gets injured before saturday, another thing i see west ham want yakubu for wait for it 1-2 million REPORT -i know he has not played that well since he came back from his 1 year injury but he would cost a lot more than that and for a start i would not even sell him.

Jeez how bad were we yesterday i missed the game but managed to catch the highlights on MOTD.We did nothing first half alright you could say we were unlucky not to come away with a point if not for Howards howler but it wasnt until late on in the game we actualy started to play a bit of frigging football. So its another iffy start for us against a team who are of no great shakes total dissapointment im afraid from a pissed off blue and its only the first game of the season lol.
We were in control of the ball a lot but useless in the final third Tbh, we didn't look anything like we did in pre-season and Pienaar definetly looked distracted .. a bit like Lescott last season .. I'm just wondering if the boss might be looking to get an out and out winger in before the transfer window closes.

Agree with that but we were rubbish from start to finish, blackburn were not much better if at all,the only real shot we had was Jagielka's 93th minute strike which you would expect the keeper to save as it was just above his head-made it look better for camera's,think neville is better right back than hibbert but coleman is better than both [and he wasnt in squad],i wouldnt have played distin-hes turning into yobo for me,felliani-just bk from 6 months injury in last 3 weeks,
I would have played beckford instead of saha and had yakubu on bench, bringing gueye off the bench to run at players if things were'nt going well in the game, best i expected was a 1-1 draw as we always lose our 1st game and alot of the time we dont seem to start till a few months in,before some say howard is rubbish etc which ive seen all over the net-think of all the points and saves he's won for us and i would 100% keep him in goal,
