Essential journeys only
The Met Office often advises that you shouldn't attempt to travel in some areas unless your journey is 'essential'.
What constitutes an essential journey?
A trip to get insulin for a 'fitting' baby would probably be described as 'essential'. Is a trip to buy disposable nappies for the same baby essential?
Is getting in to work essential? Maybe 'yes' if you work for the emergency services. What about if you work in a bank or an estate agent's office? Is it really essential that you get in to work?
You get the gist....
Adjective
* S: (adj) essential, indispensable (absolutely necessary; vitally necessary) "essential tools and materials"; "funds essential to the completion of the project"; "an indispensable worker"
* S: (adj) essential (basic and fundamental) "the essential feature"
* S: (adj) all-important, all important, crucial, essential, of the essence (of the greatest importance) "the all-important subject of disarmament"; "crucial information"; "in chess cool nerves are of the essence"
* S: (adj) essential (being or relating to or containing the essence of a plant etc) "essential oil"
* S: (adj) substantive, essential (defining rights and duties as opposed to giving the rules by which rights and duties are established) "substantive law"

Going to work so you can get paid thus paying your mortgage bills, massive heating bills etc. or getting your food, visiting your elderly relatives to make sure they are ok........that sort of thing you mean.

So, mainly, it's essential if it involves losing money?
It's not essential if you can take it as holidays or get paid when you aren't at work?
Can you give me a good example of a journey that someone wants to take but it is not essential?

Working as a home delivery driver for a supermarket means I can't take holiday over the christmas period. Have to work through it.
Usually the old todgers filling their cars up from 3/4 to full incase there is a fuel shortage.

The Jeremy Vine show disussed something similar to this today. A trucker was arguing with a woman that she shouldn't be on the road in this weather as her 'trip to take the kids to see granny at christmas' was not essential, however, she argued back that she was delayed because a jackknifed lorry had blocked the road so they shouldn't be out driving. He countered with how would the supermarkets have full shelves if they weren't out delivering? She said if we weren't allowed out in our cars (like the trucker was saying) then they wouldn't have a job to deliver to supermarkets as we wouldn't be out buying the stock.
It then made me think would that trucker agree with me going to work, as some of you on here know I'm a truck tyre fitter, so if he broke down with a puncture/blowout he'd need us to get him back on his way? Or if he had a problem with his engine he'd need a mechanic to come out. I don't think he'd thought of that when he was saying it should only be truckers and the emergency services out in these conditions.
Also my works is the type of place who'd probably fucking sack ya if you rang in and said you weren't coming of the weather lol!
It will always differ to everyone on what constitutes an 'essential journey' in my opinion as people are people! If I'd realised I'd forgotten to buy a turnip for the christmas dinner I'd fucking walk to Tesco for it!
Also, how does the bloke who drives the gritter get to work???

I have a grand daughter in Yorkhill Hospital. The doctors have said that she will be able to get out for Christmas day. Now it might not be an essential journey but you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be up the to pick her up and bring her home for christmas.
