hi bazz, i'm not 100% techno geek but since hotmail is web-based, i thought maybe trying to open it using a different browser might work?

I know when i have problems with IE, I use Firefox or Chrome and the website that has problems with IE don't seem to have problems with the other two.

Might work for your friend

Also tell him not to open spam e-mails. That's how they spread these viruses by putting an interesting heading or a misleading heading to get you to click it and bang you're gone. If it's not an email from someone he knows then mark it as spam and it will go to his spam box from there on or it does in gmail anyway - i'm sure Hotmail would be similar...

Open Internet Explorer

Tools > Internet options > Connections tab > LAN settings

Make sure proxy server isnt ticked.

Had so many jobs recently where this 1 minute fix has been needed.

his hotmail will be hacked

it happened to my missus

to get it back you need to contact msn

To get your hotmail account back you must fill out a validation from to confirm you are the owner of the account (try to include as much information in the email as you can) eg, who you last messaged, who last emailed you, what type of emails you have in your inbox i.e, friends usually email you or spam emails.

MSN/hotmail validation link email= http://email.about.com/gi/dynamic/of...26ct%3Deformcs

it can take up to 3 days for them to get back to you, and if you are successful, they will send you an email to the email address you give them that takes you to a password reset link, where you reset you password.

they will ask

1. Your Windows Live ID
2. Your first name and your last name
3. Your date of birth (month/date/year)
4. Your country
5. Your state (if applicable)
6. Your postal code
7. Your IP address List the IP addresses from each computer that you use to access your account. To determine your IP address, visit the following Web site:
http://www.whatismyip.com
The numbers that appear at the top of this Web page is your IP address.
8. The answer to your secret question
9. The "alternate e-mail address" that is on file for the account
10. Your Internet service provider. An ISP is a company that provides an end user with a connection to the Internet and other similar services, such as e-mail. Examples include MSNIA, EarthLink, and Comcast.
11. The last date and time when you successfully signed in

More information that may help us verify account ownership:

Windows Live Hotmail customers

12. The names of any folders that you created in addition to the default folders
13. Names of contacts in your address book (please include the e-mail address)
14. Subjects of any old mail that is in your Inbox or mail folders

Windows Live Messenger customers

15. Names of contacts on your contact list (please include the e-mail address)
16. Your Windows Live Messenger nickname (display name)

if he cannot get online with his bank tell him to phone them to suspend online activity

good chance the prick will have hung the account trying passwords (which he better hope was different from his hotmail) the person who has compromised the hotmail will also be sending the same links to be clicked to all his contacts

since kubla pointed out the risk with online bank accounts especially after a email account has been comprimised

a wee accie tip

create a new e mail account

ensure the name (email addy) has no connection to any existing email account or user name or anything that can be linked to you

use the most ridiculous password you can think of using random letters numbers etc ... do not use words or anything that can be guessed

use this e mail solely for the bank to cantact (although most never e mail you ) and never give the adress to anyone or use online for anything

if a e mail arrives stating from bank phone them to check prior to opening

nothing is fool proof but these measures should help keep you safer

i know seems a lot of fuss and effort but as someone who had bank cards cloned last year trust me a lot easier than trying to recover and correct identity theft

If he wants to continue using hotmail/live mail then download the Windows Live Mail client - along side a good virus scanner it will detect incoming mail for viruses, phishing etc etc.

Probably the safest way to use a hotmail account.

Swept the computer with everything, malwarebytes, spybot, full virus check, crap cleaner the lot and turns out all you need to do is change your password.

Changing the password will only work if you get rid of the Trojan that gave them the original information, otherwise, just sit and wait your turn to get back to the top of their list again.
