I really don't see a problem with ads.

Step 1: Sticks ads on the site.
Step 2: Introduce Firefox and Adblock to regular members.
Step 3: Links hunters see ads.
Step 4: Profit.

(possible step 5: Seek extra from regulars if revenue doesn't cover server costs - knowing that i will probably be peanuts.)

It honestly makes no sense. Who here honestly doesn't want to see this site pay for itself?

Step 2 fooks up stumblers, plus a lot of links dont work in firefox anyway apparently so be hassle for some people to use two browsers.

The only ads i ever have a problem with would be pop up ones, other than that i think some of the dolls i could meet in my area arent bad on the eyes.

If people are still using IE then they need to wise-up. All links work fine in Firefox, Opera and Chrome.

The Man from del Monte doen't have as closed a mind-set as that. He'll be the first to admit that he is open to new ideas.

It will take a lot of persuassion to get some mods on-side, but stranger things have happened.

I was throwing the idea out to discussion and thankfully there's been some feedback.

Depends on how much can be gained from it. I was reading an AMA on reddit from a guy who ran a social network and he said he got roughly 1p for every 1000 impressions of an ad.

Obviously others give me or less. Would have to devise some scale of profit against annoyance and see where the perfect balance lies. Not much sense in plastering ads all over the place unless Scudd wants to buy a condo in Peckham.

edit: The Go Compare guy would hit high on the annoyance scale. As will meerkats.
