fantastic thread , incoperates everything that makes this wee country so wonderfull
great music , mis understood politics , our religeous divisions which can find its way into everything , the unique sense of humour , the bond (no not mr connery) against everything not Scottish (especially english) and even the fantastic weather
ill let you all into a little secret ,25 years ago when seperation was looking a real possiability the govt requested a proper financial review by independent bodies , i was one of those who worked on it and at a time when uk finances where a lot better than present and Scotland had a lot more home based industries and businiesses as well as less of a subsidy from the linlithgow agreement scotland was running at a negative of 42% of its gdp , i think ImperiaL noted -46% being quoted at todays rate
if either of those numbers were to adopted today scotland would need the following
a end to
free prescriptions /eye tests
free tutition fees
home care for eldery /subsidised resedential care
a increase of approx
a base 25 to 30 % tax rate
a mid tax rate (40k to 100k) 45 %
a top rate of 60%
corporation tax of 42.5%
and vat on all items of 22.5 %
and the real possiability of charges for hospital and gp services
this would only make up the deficit
it wouldnt cover things mentioned earlier like armerd and security forces including emergency services
customs , international development and eec contributions and diplomatic costs abroad
i did a costing 10 years ago for a haulage firm based 60 miles into south lanarkshire from border , 90% of its business was in the central belt perth stirling etc , under the then proposed taxes etc if the company (250 truck fleet) moved 65 miles south into cumbria it would save over £3m a year so what would large multi national companies do ?
would independant scotland be nice , yes but a non independant scotland is beautifull too ,i must admit i would probably move south again as much as i love up here
Hibs
my favourite awayground(after pittodrie old history ) and i love leith for some reason (stayed in edinburgh for 2 years ) and yes Sunshine on leith does stir the blood a bit
but what i love most about scotland is no matter how bad it gets , how cold wet , how deep a recession , how much the divide causing tension each and everyone of the people stays the same way , they may try to kill each other but are the same to be the first to help each other and give a stranger their last and make anybody welcome and feel at home and always that unique humour is never far away
a friend used to say
it may be a cauld keich ridden midden but its our cauld keich ridden midden and nuthin will beat it
true words
you know one other sad thing
i went walkabout (borrow a oz term) last year for a few weeks and wandered around stirlingshire ,perth shire tayside ,fife and inverness areas
so many people in glasgow/edinburgh dont take the time to go the 2 hours max and see just how beautifull some of this little country really is
i am fortunate i have 2 countries both very diverse ,both with its own problems and divisions , but both very beautifull and in many ways very simlar people and both justifiably proud
perhaps thats why i can never settle in either and miss both
a shared thing from my youth when first returned here that sums up being Scottish(the ability to laugh at ourself) and Scotland to me
remember scotland the brave was still the national anthem in those days FSi Embedded Video - Visit Source
Two crackin very different posts there Accie sums us up to a tee, talking about tea lol a couple of buttered slices of plain bread, square sausage and a dollop of hp brown sauce big mug of tea and a caramel log cannae beat it eh

The one with the dress and the blue hat? .....Or the one showing off his Dirk!!!!
Great posts accieturk... I agree with much of what you said.
Particularly point about scottish folk not seeing much of their country. I have been fortunate indeed, for over the past 12 months or so I have travelled up the East coast, round Thurso Doonrae, and down the West coast a few times all in the pursuit of taking some fotos. Including visiting Orkney via the ferry at John O Groats, and also visiting Skye via the ferry rather than use the road bridge
I am going away for a few days over the nxt wk or so to do more of the same. Folks, particularly in the Central belt, have seen so little of their country...
We truly live in the most beautiful Wee Country on the planet ...

Do you post your pics online mate? Perhaps on flickr.com or something? Wouldn't mind having a look at your photography skills! Our lass is into it too and has posted a few on flickr but she, like me, doesn't get anywhere near enough time she'd like to persue her hobbies more ha ha.
No I dont have any images online as yet, but I will get there eventually.
I have thought about the flikr thing for a bit, but am pretty lazy. I have a coupla thousand at least images on my computer. At the moment I am putting a cd together for my family, Brother & sisters cousins etc.
They live in various counties around the planet and miss home. so I started with a wee picture story with words, some short video, and put music to match the images on show.
I got the idea when, for a "significant" anniversary I made a picture album with appropriate comical comments below each foto for my wife. It started with a copy of her birth certificate, and followed both her and my own life (we grew up together) and the various places we went to school, lived and worked , holiday'd, as well of course with more than a liberal sprinkling of the kids growing up. It took me months and months to put it together, but everyone loves looking through it.
So I did the same with the DVD for the family, it showed where in Glasgow we were born, mapped all the high and low points. In general a pictorial biography in still images and short cameo video films a story mini bio if you like of our wee clan all put to nusic... It was fabby fun, but Man O Man it took me ages.
I have now been commisioned (too posh a word) telt/told,.. I jest, asked, to do a similar DVD about Scotland its history and scenery all told and put to music etc etc.... So thats my excuse for wandering about our country.
I am most, no, very fortunate, to have the time to go walkabout, or rather drive about. The wife hates in the car and is glad to see the back of me I think lol. For me it's a kinda hobby and I love driving about without any particular destination in mind. When I stay in a hotel or B&B I get up in the morning, flip a coin to see if I shoeld go right , or left when I leave the car park, tis great fun..... Man I am wittering on here !!!!
I would love to see both your and or your daughter pics. can you post the addy here ? or pvt msg me it? ..... No better way to chill out than looking at folks work...I love it.....what kinda kit do you or your daughter use?
I was into photography quite a bit years ago, but work and family pressures made me leave it behind.. But I have the time now and bought a digitlal SLR, great kit. When I think of all these nights in a dark room, or messing about with slides... Digital rocks.
thanks Fyodor
