Best of/Worst of....books
Posting here as our illiterate admin sorts haven't created a book section in the entertainment part of the site.
Getting through two a week at the moment (long journey to and from work!). I had a stack I'd been working my way through but it's running pretty low.
Some good reads; Mario Puzo-Godfather or Omerta. Both were excellent. I am currently enjoying James Patterson-Cross. About halfway through. Hoping to finish tomorrow.
Anyone recommend some more?
I recommend this;
Great!

Nice one. RE George Best another one I enjoyed about someone with an addictive personality was Million Little Pieces by James Frey. They even did an episode of South Park in honour of it.

I didn't enjoy Shakespeare at school. Thought it was shite to be honest. Hard work to read.

HOMICIDE a year on the killing Streets - David Simon is a fatastic read, its the inspiration for the Wire - brilliant.
Any Chuck Phalanuick book - he is an amazing writer, total Nihilism

Aye, looked at The Damned Utd that over the weekend. Fiction about dirty Leeds. I think that'll be my next buy.

Shakespeare was never meant to be read. It's beautiful on stage, but turgid on the page.
I'd recomend "We need to talk about Kevin", "The book thief" and "Carter beats the devil" for fiction. I've read all three recently and they are excellent. Oh, and Sharky, I think you'd like Magnus Mills. He does social commentary through parable-like stories, but in a very light hearted way.
If you're into non-fiction then "Michelangelo and the pope's ceiling" by Ross King is very good. "Killing Pablo" by Mark Bowden is fascinating - it's a biography of Pablo Escabar. Finally "Samurai Williams" - I've not read that recently, but it's one of my favourite books. It's about an English mariner who ends up in Fuedal Japan, and becomes a friend of the shogun. That one is by Giles Milton.
I've also heard good things about the Albert Pierrepoint book mentioned above. He was the last in a family of executioners.

For some inane reason i was looking at a picture on the net of that very chippy just yesterday. It's got a 'comedy' name, which i have forgot, and has strong loyalist links and a few flags on poles hanging ower the front.
George Best burger in a big advert on the front window. Havent a clue how why i was looking at a pic of it or what sent me there like.
On autobiographys Roy Keanes is a must. Normal books, Daniel J Boorstin's 'the image' is something recommended to me, havent started it yet, just got it actually, but is a look at the culture of celebrity in the states and how media can shape the minds of the weak or uneducated. So i'm told, anyways

I agree kubs I sometimes go in my local library they even have copies of fourfourtwo and other mags and papers...I have recently been reading alot of local history and got a book called "Little Italy" about Italians in Liverpool and it even mentioned my Great Grandfather which I didn't expect. So get to your local library they are closing them down because people arent using them...
