For me as a Man Utd fan it's got to be Ronaldo. I was siting in the South stand on the first home game of the 04-05 season. We were playing Bolton and playing shit. After about an hour of banal football, Ronaldo was summoned, and I'll never forget it. He proceeded to absolutely destroy the Bolton right back. Nutmegs, stepovers, the lot. The crowd went bananas. We ran out 4-0 winners, and to their lasting credit, The Bolton fans applauded him as he left the pitch. LOL The last time any opposing fans applauded him!
Cantona, Van Nistlerooy, Veron etc. all had memorable debuts, but in my lifetime Ronaldos was the most memorable, because it was so mesmerising.
Obviously didn't see it in real life but I watched it in a pub in Lincoln in 2005 - Woodgate's debut for Real Madrid. An own goal, and then got sent off. It's not the best in terms of merit, but it had me cracking up that they'd paid over the odds for player who spent a year out before actually getting on the pitch.
Think it was probably Matt Jansen. He was head and shoulders above the rest of the players on the pitch. Seemed to find space all the time which I don't think you can train, just instinct. Shame his career went downhill after his motorbike accident.
Thanks all, interesting stuff, woodgates bow in Madrid was hilarious God love him. Kanchelskis debut was electrifying Suzie, and I cannot believe I had forgotten all about Matt Jansen. He was really unfortunate. Looked a very capable player.
Speaking of bad debuts, Gary Pallisters at Old Trafford was deemed a disaster. Can´t remember the opposition, but he gave away a penalty and was caught badly out of position for another goal. He turned out to be one of Fergies all time great buys, even though he was expensive for the day at 2.3 million pounds
Can't believe no one has mentioned Rooney's United Champions League debut yet? A hat-trick and an assist.
It was pretty clear he was going to be a world class player at Everton, but to turn out that performance in a United debut is nothing short of balls of steel.
How could i miss that? Fenerbahce at home hit for six, all three Rooney goals were brilliant. I remember I was left with 8 tickets for that game, Irish family had missed their flight and I only sold the last one literally at kick off. Amazing stuff. Now that you´ve reminded me . . . . . . . . I´m gonna stick with Ronaldo because he lifted a horrible game and showed true guts himself.

As soon as i seen this thread, rooneys debut for united sprung to mind and as i scrolled down and seen no-one had posted it i was going to until i read revs post. lol. But still im going to second that sensational debut. To do that after coming back from a broken foot was really something else.
