It was a stupid blunder, but I don't know why The Sun is wanting to make such a storm in a tea cup, oh wait yes I do, they are The Sun!
At the end of the day 99.9% of the Germans that fought in ww2 had no idea what was going on, and the German propaganda machine had put fear in the German minds of what the allied forces would do to them, especially the Russians (hence why they surrendered on the Western front and kept fighting on the Eastern front), and told them that they needed to fight to protect themselves.
I have been to one of the military graveyards in Normandy and the ages of a lot of Germans buried are 16-20 year olds, boys! None of which would have had a clue that such things a concentration camps were around and what they was there to do. Just because they wore Nazi uniforms doesn't mean that we shouldn't remember them and brush them under the carpet.
