acer laptop

My mate has a acer laptop when he swiched it on theis morning all the programs are missing even the security ,it wont let him reload the discs that came with it ,its as if somthing has totaly wiped everything anybody any idea what could have caused this and know a fix thanks

HD failure perhaps if nothing at all is happening...
